Elementary
Mathematics Specialists and Teacher Leaders Project
McDaniel College's
Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell has received grant funding
from the Brookhill Foundation and the Cisco
Learning Institute to develop a graduate program for
elementary mathematics teacher leaders, form a national
clearinghouse for mathematics specialist programs, develop
online interactive modules focused on leadership issues
for elementary mathematics specialists and teacher leaders,
support program initiatives to ensure the continuing professional
development and mentoring of a cadre of mathematics teacher-leaders
and elementary school mathematics specialists, and assess
the impact of such teaching specialists on student achievement
and school district improvement throughout the region.
"We need elementary school mathematics specialists,
elementary classroom teachers who know and understand
mathematics and can effectively mentor their colleagues.
Given the need for students with a mathematics and science
background and interest, this project is a first step
in that direction, with multiple national implications,"
states Dr. Fennell.

Teaching |
|
Dr. Fennell is a Professor of Mathematics
Education at McDaniel
College in Westminster, Maryland.
"It is important that teachers know and care.
Know about what they teach (content) and care very
deeply about that knowledge and the children they
are teaching (pedagogy). This content and pedagogical
knowledge must be continually and consistently nurtured
and strengthened throughout one's career."
- Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell

National
Mathematics Advisory Panel
On April 18, 2006 President Bush created the National
Mathematics Advisory Panel. Dr. Fennell served as
a member of the panel.
The panel examined and summarized the scientific evidence
related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, with
a specific focus on preparation for and success in learning
algebra. Two reports containing policy recommendations
on how to improve mathematics achievement for all students
were issued. The final report was submitted to U.S. Secretary
of Education, Margaret Spellings.
